- DIED. Steve Rubell, 45, flamboyant co-founder of Studio 54,
- the trend setting Manhattan discotheque; of complications from
- hepatitis and septic shock; in New York City. During the late
- 1970s, when publicity-seeking celebrities like Andy Warhol, Liza
- Minnelli and Bianca Jagger flocked to Studio 54, Rubell and his
- longtime partner, Ian Schrager, were the kings of Manhattan night
- life. The party came to an end in 1979, when the two were convicted
- of tax evasion. After serving one-year prison terms, Rubell and
- Schrager started successful hotel ventures and a new Manhattan
- night spot, the Palladium.
